Types of Indian Skin: Understanding Yours Beyond 'Oily' or 'Dry'
Most skincare brands sort skin into three buckets: oily, dry, combination. It is a useful starting point — but for Indian skin, which behaves differently across seasons, regions, and life stages, it leaves a lot unsaid.
Ayurvedic doshas — a richer language
Vata skin: thin, dry, prone to fine lines and quick reactivity. Pitta skin: warm, photo-sensitive, prone to inflammation, redness and pigmentation. Kapha skin: thicker, oilier, prone to congestion and slow healing. Most Indians are a blend — usually two doshas dominant.
Climate and skin behaviour
North Indian summers strip; monsoons clog; winters crack. South Indian humidity keeps the skin reactive year-round. Hill stations make even oily skin feel dry. Your skin doesn't have one type — it has many, depending on the month.
Skin is not a type. It is a behaviour.
How to read your own skin
Check it three times a day for a week — morning, after work, before bed. Note where it feels tight, where it shines, where it flares. The patterns are your real skin type. They will change with seasons. Your routine should too.
