The Preservative Shift: Why We Ditched Phenoxyethanol

Mamash Standard

We use a "Gold Standard" preservation system comprised of Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, and Gluconolactone. These are food-grade, Ecocert-approved preservatives that effectively protect your product without mimicking estrogen or disrupting your endocrine system.

Industry Standard

Most brands use Phenoxyethanol. While legal, emerging research suggests it may pose risks to ovarian function and is often advised against for infant care in Europe.

The Fragrance Loophole: Zero Hidden Chemicals

Mamash Standard

We are proudly 100% Fragrance-Free. We do not mask our ingredients. What you smell is the raw purity of Shea Butter, Jojoba, and clean botanical extracts. No Phthalates. No guessing.

Industry Standard

The word "Fragrance" on a label can hide up to 3,000 unlisted chemicals, including Phthalates (plasticizers linked to reproductive issues). Even "Allergen-Free" fragrances can still contain these hormone disruptors.

We use high-performance, biologically safe alternatives like Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Panthenol (Vitamin B5), and Sodium Hyaluronate. These strengthen your skin barrier and treat pigmentation safely, with zero risk to fetal development.

Industry Standard

Many anti-aging products use Retinoids or high-dose Salicylic Acid, which are unsafe during pregnancy.

Retinoids (Retinol, Retinoic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate)

Also known as: Retinol, Tretinoin, Retinoic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate, Vitamin A derivatives

Why We Banned It:

Vitamin A derivatives can cause birth defects when used topically during pregnancy. They accumulate in the body and cross the placental barrier.

Health Effects:

  • • Can affect brain and nervous system development

Hydroquinone

Also known as: Hydroquinone, 1,4-Benzenediol, Quinol

Why We Banned It:

This skin-lightening agent has high systemic absorption rates (35-45%) and potential carcinogenic properties. Not safe during pregnancy.

Health Effects:
  • • High systemic absorption affects entire body
  • • Potential carcinogen
  • • May cause ochronosis (permanent skin discoloration)
  • • Hormone disrupting potential

  • • Skin lightening creams
  • • Dark spot correctors
  • • Brightening serums

Salicylic Acid (High Concentrations)

Also known as: Salicylic Acid, BHA, Beta Hydroxy Acid

Why We Banned It:

High concentrations (>2%) of salicylic acid are not recommended during pregnancy as they're related to aspirin and may affect fetal development.

Health Effects:
  • • May affect fetal cardiovascular development
  • • Related to Reye's syndrome concerns
  • • Can cause pregnancy complications at high doses

Chemical UV Filters

Also known as: Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Benzophenone

Why We Banned It:

Chemical sunscreen ingredients are proven endocrine disruptors that are absorbed into the bloodstream and can affect hormone levels during pregnancy.

Phthalates

Also known as: Dibutyl Phthalate, DBP, DEP, DEHP, Diethylhexyl Phthalate, Fragrance (often hidden)

Why We Banned It:

Phthalates are proven endocrine disruptors that affect reproductive development. They're often hidden in 'fragrance' or 'parfum' on labels.

Health Effects:

  • • Linked to reproductive abnormalities in males
  • • May cause developmental delays
  • • Associated with preterm birth

Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde Releasers

Also known as: Formaldehyde, DMDM Hydantoin, Quaternium-15, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Diazolidinyl Urea, Bronopol

Why We Banned It:

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives slowly release this toxic chemical over time.

Lead & Heavy Metals

Also known as: Lead, Lead Acetate, Mercury, Thimerosal, Chromium, Cadmium

Why We Banned It:

Heavy metals are neurotoxins that can cross the placenta and affect fetal brain development. Often found as contaminants in cosmetics.

  • • Linked to learning disabilities and developmental delays

Testing Parameters

Parabens

Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben...
Parabens mimic estrogen in the body and have been found in breast tumor tissue. While research is ongoing, we exclude them as a precaution.

PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols)

Synthetic Fragrances

"Fragrance" can contain up to 3,000 undisclosed chemicals including phthalates, musks, and allergens. Companies aren't required to list individual ingredients.

Phenoxyethanol

Aluminum Compounds

Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Aluminum Zirconium, Aluminum Salts
Aluminum is absorbed through skin, especially when applied to areas like underarms. Research links aluminum to hormonal effects and potential health concerns.

Triclosan

Synthetic Musks

Galaxolide, Tonalide, Musk Ketone, Nitro Musks...
Synthetic musks accumulate in body fat and breast milk. They have been detected in cord blood and may affect fetal development.
